How the Oberliga Nord works
The Oberliga Nord is the northern group of Germany's third tier, below the DEL and the DEL2. It brings together clubs from northern and eastern Germany, such as Hannover, Duisburg, Herne, Leipzig and Rostock, and one Dutch club, the Tilburg Trappers. A regulation win is worth three points, a win after overtime or a shootout two and a loss after overtime or a shootout one.
After the regular season the leading clubs of the North and the South meet in common playoffs. The champion can move up to the DEL2 if it holds a licence for it.
What decides Oberliga Nord games
The Oberliga Nord covers long distances, from the Dutch border to the Baltic coast, so trips and back-to-back weekends weigh on smaller squads. A handful of clubs with professional ambitions usually set the pace, and home ice is worth more than in the higher leagues.
Our provider has scores and tables for the Oberliga but no goal scorers, so the model works from results only: each club gets attack and defence ratings from this season's Oberliga Nord games, adjusted for the opponents faced, plus the league's home-ice edge.
Reading the table and the picks
The Oberliga Nord table on this page lists every club with games played, wins, regulation losses, overtime losses, goal difference and points, with the playoff places marked. A club with games in hand can sit lower than its form suggests, so compare the games played column.
For each game you find our winner pick with its probability, the result after 60 minutes, the projected score and the total goals. Finished games stay listed with the final score and our pick.
Oberliga Nord predictions: questions
- Why does a Dutch club play in the Oberliga Nord?
- The Tilburg Trappers moved from the Dutch league into the German system and play in the Oberliga Nord. Their games count in the table like everyone else's.
- How do the Oberliga playoffs work?
- The best clubs of the Oberliga Nord and the Oberliga Süd meet in common knockout rounds. The champion can be promoted to the DEL2 when it meets the licence requirements.
- How many points does a win bring in the Oberliga Nord?
- Three for a win in regulation, two for a win after overtime or a shootout, one for a loss after overtime or a shootout and none for a regulation loss.
- How accurate are the Oberliga Nord predictions?
- Every pick is settled in public on the accuracy page, by competition and by confidence, so the record can be checked game by game.
- How many goals are scored in Oberliga Nord games?
- Finished Oberliga Nord games this season have averaged 7 goals in total, and the home team has won 62% of them. Each game's own projected total is on its prediction page.
- When are Oberliga Nord predictions published?
- Up to 7 days before the face-off. Each prediction is updated as the betting market moves, until the game starts.
- What do the puck line and the total mean?
- The puck line is hockey's handicap: −1.5 means the favourite has to win by two goals or more, +1.5 that the underdog covers if it wins or loses by one. A win after overtime or a shootout is always by one goal. The total is the number of goals both teams score together, overtime included and a shootout counted as one goal; the over/under pick says whether the game should finish above or below the line.
- Are the Oberliga Nord predictions free?
- Yes. The win probability, projected score, puck line and total goals of every Oberliga Nord game are free to read, with no sign-up.
- How are the predictions made?
- Each team gets attack and defence ratings from this season's games in regulation, weighted toward recent form and adjusted for the opponents faced, plus a home-ice edge measured for each league. A Poisson model turns them into the chance of every score, ties go to overtime and the shootout, and where bookmakers price a game the model is blended with their consensus.
